(Kei mouth, 2020-04-03)

#2

I'm signing because I suffer from emotional and psychological illnesses. The stress unnecessarily caused by this ban is counter active to maintaining my stability.

I am not a criminal, never was and never be.

Government has no right to make me feel that I am committing a crime. It's a violation of my human right.

(Kei Mouth, 2020-04-03)

Its my right to smoke in my house, on my own property which I own and pay exorbitant rates and taxes on. Secondly, I work for my money, pay my taxes, what I do thereafter is my business. Smoking and Covid19, have nothing in relation to each other.

(Pretoria, 2020-04-03)

#8

During this Corona Virus the biggest crisis we have ever had in my 64 year's.
We need to be able to calm our nerves with a
Cigarette. This house is like a war zone when we can't buy and that is not good as we are together for a long period of time.
I have always led and gone down the honest life.
I don't want to have to sneak around like a common criminal to get cigarettes. Please lift the ban on cigerattes so people can be more at peace in there lock down at home.
Thanking you in advance
Dawn Pratt

By banning smoking in the privacy of my home and NEVER in public, i cannot see how this will have any impact on the Carona virus.

(East london, 2020-04-03)

#22

I smoke in my house. And feel it does not harm anybody else.

(sasolburg, 2020-04-03)

#23

I need to buy cigarettes as it will help us to relax better during this time and this is not the time to go without smoking as there is not enough activity to do during Lockdown. This may cause problems as we are 2 smokers at home and will be negative in this time.

(Vanderbijlpark, 2020-04-03)

#24

It is my choice to smoke. It helps calm my nerves. I do not need anyone to tell me if i am allowed to buy or not.

(Benoni, 2020-04-03)

#35

I am a smoker

(Gauteng, 2020-04-04)

#36

I have a right to smoke within my own home

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-04)

#37

Smoking is an addiction that doesn't just take one day or 21 days to get over. To stop just like that is not good for the nervousness and withdrawal do lead to bad tempers and violence in the home.

(Randburg, 2020-04-04)

#38

To ban ciggaretes during a 21 day lock down where we are confined to our own homes is ridiculous, there was no warning either. The government has crimilized smoking. I can understand banning alcohol but not smoking!!

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-04)

#39

I smoke

(Gauteng, 2020-04-04)

(Randburg, 2020-04-04)

#45

This is my right to smoke

(Boksburg, 2020-04-05)

#46

By being able to buy cigarettes legally will refrain me from engaging in criminal activity (which I have never committed), by sourcing it illegally. I live on my own and coping without a cigarette can be quite challenging. Please help me so that I can help you by complying to lockdown regulations

(Durban, 2020-04-05)

#47

As per petition statements.

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-05)

#48

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-05)

#49

I am sining becaude the tabaco company and taces fromm sellimg siggarettes are lost for SA

(Boksburg, 2020-04-05)

#50

Being a smoker and not being able to smoke is a health risk towards us, we stand a higher chance to get compromised by covid-19 because of breaking down our immune system for NOT being able to smoke, ALSO it gives us a greater chance of having heart attack or lounge disease if we stop smoking instantly with out slowing down gradually, this is words that came from a certified doctor that has mentioned it. i have already had fits and axiety attacks for not being able to smoke, and i have a mental heath issue.. This is killing 7% of South Africas population by forcing them to stop smoking and its a major health risk!!

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-05)

#52

It's our right as people to do what we want. Can't take away our sigarettes. It's my life.

(Benoni, 2020-04-05)

#53

My choice to smoke, I am not a drinker

(Bredell, 2020-04-05)

#57

(Jhb, 2020-04-05)

#59

It is unfair to smokers

(Vanderbijlpark, 2020-04-05)

#60

I'm running out of cigarettes. Full time smoker difficult to just stop smoking immediately.

(Vereeniging, 2020-04-05)

#61

Im signing because banning cigarettes will not stop the spread of the virus. Smokers will be running around looking for a smoke because of the ban.

(Boksburg, 2020-04-05)

#62

I am nicotine dependant

(GRAAFF-REINET, 2020-04-05)

#63

I have seen the anxiety that smokers experience when they do not have access to cigarettes. It is now exasperated by lockdown and uncertainty.

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-05)

#66

Smoking is legal and so Is alcohol.

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-05)

#68

Because it’s keeping my sanity while in lock down

(Gauteng, 2020-04-05)

#71

It is my choice to smoke. It does not cause the virus to spread. My human rights have been taken away. Lisa

(Durban, 2020-04-06)

#72

I think it is unfair. Having depression and anxiety, this is what helps me get through the day.

(Hoedspruit, 2020-04-06)

#73

It is against freedom of choice and an infringement of my constitutional right.

(Durban, 2020-04-06)

#74

It's cruel and unnecessary punishment to smokers who had insufficient warning. Smoking is addiction and cannot be stopped overnight

(Pretoria, 2020-04-06)

#75

I am signing this petition to help all essential staff whom are smokers. During this very difficult time, we need to unwind and we are not able to do so due to the cigarette ban. Please think of us on the front line, we have no way of staying calm. Please, please, please re think this.

Thank you

(Pretoria, 2020-04-07)

#76

I am not an irresponsible person, but I am a smoker and I purchase cigarettes legally. This ban is a violation of my right as a citizen and adult.

(Boksburg, 2020-04-07)

#78

I really need to smoke

(Boksburg, 2020-04-07)

#79

I have been smoking cigarettes for more than 30 years. I am already stressed due to lockdown and this is adding to my stress. I'm a tax-paying law-abiding citizen and have been following the lockdown rules. Smoking does not cause or increase the chances of contracting COVID-19. The effects of withdrawal are exacerbating depression and anxiety.

(Boksburg, 2020-04-07)

#83

I am a smoker and deserve the right to make my own choice, I do not harm or disturb anyone around me.

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-09)

#84

This is a stupid ban with absolutely no scientific reason behind it.
Instead the government wants to push an agenda that has absolutely zero benefit it's citizens or economy.
Tobacco can be purchased the same time as any other groceries so there is no need to increase trips to the shops.
What makes this worse is if tabacco is not seen as "essential" then why the f(heck) are chocolates and other items
being sold, in no way is a chocolate bar or a carbonated beverage an essential item but these may be freely purchased.
Government should get the heads out of their ...... and LISTEN to the people.

People get withdrawal symptoms and will do anything to get cigarettes and then illicit trading happens. Please lift the ban of cigarettes.

(Centurion, 2020-04-10)

#89

Smokers are being punished

(Port Elizabeth, 2020-04-11)

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-29)

#100

I am a considerate smoker. I do not smoke near people. it keeps me sane.

(Cape Town, 2020-04-29)

#101

I would like to buy cigarettes legally instead of illegally where the action would make me a Criminal. Are you joking? You state that smokers are at a higher risk of contracting Covid-19 because of their lungs. You are aware that by stopping smoking for a couple of months or continuing to smoke would have lost zero impact on my lungs. So what is your basis for the ban. And if your reasons are health related, then why aren’t sweets banned as they lead to diabetes which is a major underlying symptom that paired with Covid-19 could lead to serious problems and even death. So why don’t you ban sweets.
You say because we share cigarettes. How would we be able to share cigarettes if we are social distancing and can’t come close enough to anyone to share even a glancing smile yet we can get close enough to share a cigarette. Wake up. The country is losing R35M in taxes per day from this cigarette ban and there is no valid reason for it.
The only plausible reason would be that certain members of government are benefiting from the trade in illicit cigarettes and or the ban has lead and will lead to further arrests of people trying to buy illegal cigarettes resulting in extra revenues for the state for fines paid. Although this doesn’t come close to the R35M in lost daily taxes.
So it is pretty clear that a couple of high ranking government officials are benefiting from this draconian law at the expense of South Africa and South Africans as a whole.

(Brakpan, 2020-04-29)

#102

I am a smoker for 40 years. I will be a nicotine addict rather than an alcholic or drug addict. I am not a child to be told what to do with my own body!! It is my constitutional right ! People can grow cannibis but I cannot buy cigarettes!!!!

(Pretoria, 2020-04-30)

#103

It is my right and freedom of choice

(Johannesburg, 2020-04-30)

#104

I think it is discrimination to NOT allow smokers to buy cigarettes, based on 2000 people that is against it. What about the 11 million people that DO smoke?? Will NDZ go if there is 2000 people against her?

(Stellenbosch, 2020-04-30)

#105

I believe that Smoking should be the choice of the individual. Walking your dog no, jogging no, buying pies no, smoking in your own home no. Workers striking I their thousands at a Mine gate with no masks or social distancing while the Police look on YES ACCEPTABLE. Go catch the real criminals and vandals and concentrate on speeding up testing. At your current testing rate it will take about 60 years to test the entire nation, assume only 10% needs testing it will still take 6 years. The aforementioned exclude private individuals testing at private lab's on their own accord. Wake up and deal with the important issues facing us.

(Umhlanga, 2020-04-30)

#106

I have the right to smoke and purchase cigarettes legally

(Boksburg, 2020-04-30)
